The 2007 National Survey of Public Library Computer and Internet Access

John Carlo Bertot, Charles R. McClure, Susan C. Thomas, Kristin M. Barton, and Jessica McGilvray of the Information Institute have published, along with the American Library Association a book based on findings of the 2007 National Survey of Public Library Computer and Internet Access. The title of the book is Libraries Connect Communities: Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study 2006-2007.

Bertot and McClure have been conducting these studies of public libraries and the Internet since 1994. Background on these studies is available at http://www.ii.fsu.edu/plinternet.cfm. A copy of the 2007 study is available from the American Library Association Web site. Information on purchasing a print copy of the book is available at the ALA Store.

Key findings from the 2007 study show that many public libraries have reached capacity in their ability to provide Internet-based services and resources; the libraries are literally, out of room and out of additional resources. In addition, there has been continued growth in the availability of wireless connectivity from public libraries. Finally, a number of public libraries continue to have limited bandwidth and workstations available for public access computing. Additional findings from the study are available in the book.
