John Brobst, Lauren H. Mandel, and Charles R. McClure Publish Chapter in Crisis Information Management: Communication and Technologies

Work conducted by the Information Use Management & Policy Institute (Information Institute) at the Florida State University College of Communication and Information, School of Library and Information Studies demonstrates the critical roles that public libraries can play in hurricane and disaster preparedness and response.

The Information Institute’s John Brobst, Lauren H. Mandel, and Charles R. McClure, PhD recently published a chapter in Crisis Information Management: Communication and Technologies (ed. Christine Hagar) that reviews findings from the Hurricane Preparedness & Response by Utilizing Florida Public Libraries project and outlines new public library service roles with regard to crisis management.  The chapter proposes public librarians as crisis managers and discusses technology solutions and communications programs that public libraries can use to aid local communities with hurricane and emergency/disaster preparedness and response.

McClure noted that with the upcoming hurricane season, those who live in hurricane prone areas should prepare for possible hurricanes and have a plan in case one arrives.

A PDF version of the chapter is available here.  For more information on the Hurricane Preparedness & Response by Utilizing Florida Public Libraries project, see the project website.
